In front of us lie the Krknjaši — small islands formed millions of years ago from limestone and dolomite, the same stone that shaped much of the Dalmatian coastline.
This landscape was created through the slow uplift of the seabed and the fracturing of rock during major tectonic changes in the Adriatic. Over thousands of years, the sea sculpted the stone, creating shallow lagoons, a bright white seabed, and underwater reefs.
It is precisely because of this pale limestone seabed and the exceptionally clear sea that sunlight creates the almost unreal turquoise color for which Krknjaši are known today as the Blue Lagoon.
Krknjaši are not just small islands. They are places where the sea becomes light. In this part of the archipelago, one does not simply observe nature… but the way light touches the seabed beneath the Adriatic.
How the Blue Lagoon Was Born
Krknjaš Veli and Krknjaš Mali share the same geological story as Drvenik Veli. Millions of years ago, powerful tectonic forces lifted ancient limestone seabeds, creating the rocky landscape of the central Dalmatian islands.
But the islands we see today did not always exist. Around 12,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, sea levels were much lower. Drvenik Veli and the Krknjaši were part of the same landmass, connected by a shallow valley.
As glaciers melted and the sea slowly rose, that valley was flooded. Only the higher ground remained above the surface, forming the islands of Drvenik Veli, Krknjaš Veli and Krknjaš Mali.
The flooded limestone valley became today’s Blue Lagoon. Its shallow, bright seabed reflects sunlight through crystal-clear water, creating the extraordinary turquoise colour that makes this place famous around the world.
